Historic Energy Retrofit & Renovation
Single-family home renovation in a quiet local neighborhood. A young family with changing space needs embarked on a major renovation to update their home’s systems and spatial configuration.
The design takes an inward-looking 1930s Dutch Colonial in a local historic district and connects it to the incredible views of a small local farm and the hillsides beyond.
The design features a strategic & capricious addition that maximized the existing square footage to create a large open living area. At the same time, we updated the street side in keeping with the character of the neighborhood. With new fluid circulation, we created space for a home-office, storage areas, and an exercise room. The renovation is filled with light & wood, provides a contemporary layout to host mid-century modern furnishings, and now looks forward instead of back in time.
There is also a hidden aspect to this project. Beyond the new experience of space, there is a pragmatic tale of insulation, air-sealing, and mechanical upgrades that will not be seen, but felt. The new life of this home is warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer, and runs on a new, efficient set of systems and improved envelope to consume less energy.
